Some Questions & Features

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 2, 2007, 12:30 AM

I've had a lot of time on my hands lately, and at times resort to thinking.  So, why are all of you here on DA?  What motivates you to go out and take pictures or write or whatever else?  What are you trying to accomplish?

Anyway, I just started to think about questions like that and thought I'd ask all of you.

For me, I'm here on DA because it inspires me to be better.  Plus, if I didn't have other photographers work to view, I might start to think that my work was amazing.  Gotta have some way of keeping me humble.  :D

Now why do I take pictures instead of paint or play an instrument or something else?  Hmm...maybe it's because I think I have a natural talent for it.  I know that there is a lot that I still need to learn, but I have much more aptitude for photography than any other art form.  Plus it's a great way to individualize the world and express it in a way people might not see otherwise.

Let me know what you think about this.  And if you haven't ever thought about it, maybe you should.  (And then tell me)

I don't take pictures or draw or anything. I only got an account so that I could comment on my roommate's stuff.

Once I was here though, I found that I really liked looking around for other people's photography. It wasn't that everyone was so amazingly gifted (although a lot of you are pretty great artists.) It's just that it's cool to see what other people find interesting enough about their environment to snap pictures of or to sketch or paint. I'll look at submissions from a few people in the same geographical area, but their works focus on completely different subject matter. Some of them will draw or photograph local buildings, a close-up of an interesting tree, a herd of deer, or some will snap a close-up of a cracked gravestone in their area.

It's all little bits of the world that I can't see on a city's or country's tourism website, and it shows me value in things that I might otherwise overlook in my own area. DA is a great public service site, in that way, and I'm glad I had a roommate who introduced me to it.

Thanks for sharing your motives and insights. I completely agree with you about how amazing it is that everyone sees the same places so differently. I often look at photographers near where I live just to see what they find interesting.

And I'm glad you had a roommate introduce you to it as well. I love your insights!
